AcroDance (PreAcro): AcroDance is a style of dance that combines dance techniques with acrobatics. Acro is an especially challenging dance style for dancers as it requires them to be trained in both dance and acrobatic skills. Dancers will increase flexibility and strength while learning key tumbling skills and tricks for dancing. Ballet or combo dance class REQUIRED for AcroDance Level I & Up. Pre-Acro dancers are strongly encouraged to enroll in Preschool or Kinderdance. Uniform: Black leotard, jazz shorts, & tan jazz shoes. (2022)
Ballet: Ballet is a performance dance that has provided the foundational techniques which are used in many other dance genres and cultures. For strong dance techniques, ballet classes are highly encouraged and prioritized for our dancers. A combination of Russian, Cecchetti, and Vaganova methods will be used to train the dancers to properly execute all styles of dance including acro, jazz, contemporary and lyrical. Uniform: Black leotard, pink tights, and pink canvas/leather ballet shoes. Hair must be in a clean bun. Hair kits may be purchased at the Front Desk; messy buns are unacceptable. (2022)
Ballroom: Ballroom dance originated as partner dances in social settings, but has evolved into both a competitive sport and a group style of dance. Dancers will explore both Latin and American styles of ballroom dance with and without a partner. Uniform: Black leotard, dance skirt, 1” or 2” tan ballroom heels; Boys see boys attire description with black Latin ballroom shoes. (2022)
Contemporary: Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical, and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floorwork, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. Uniform: Black leotard, jazz shorts, bare feet or black socks. (2022)
HipHop (PreHipHop): Hip-Hop dancing is evolving at this very moment! Dancers are encouraged to let loose and have fun. Hip hop combines street dance styles primarily performed to hip hop music or that have evolved as part of hip hop culture. It is influenced by a wide range of styles that were created in the 1970s and made popular by dance crews in the United States. Dancers may wear comfortable and moveable clothing or athletic wear. Uniform: Black Pastry Pop Tart Hip-Hop shoes. (2022)
Improv: Dance improvisation (commonly known as improv) is the process of creating movement without pre-planning any steps or choreography. Free movement is a great way to have fun, relieve any stress and explore new ways to move. Improv is a creative challenge for dancers and helps with confidence as well as connection to music. Improv class pulls from all styles of dance and is recommended for intermediate/advanced dancers. Dancers must be enrolled in two other classes of dance. Ballet and Jazz are encouraged. *This is a non-recital class. (2022)
Jazz: Jazz dance is a combination of styles and techniques based on dance evolution. All classes will focus on placement, isolations, stretching, floor work, across-the-floor combinations, and center work. Jazz dance music ranges from classical jazz music of the 20s through modern-day popular music heard on the radio. Uniform: Black leotard, jazz shorts, tan jazz shoes. Ballet class is strongly encouraged. (2022)
Jazz Funk: Jazz Funk takes elements from HipHop, Jazz, and walking dance styles to create a fun and outgoing style of dance commonly seen on TV and popular shows. Jazz Funk blends styles of dance and moves very quickly, focusing primarily on choreography, not dance technique, so dancers must be enrolled in two other classes of dance; ballet and jazz encouraged. Lyrical: Lyrical dance is a combination of ballet and jazz techniques that train the art of telling a story through dance. Dancers will learn to express emotion with their faces and bodies reflecting the story told by song lyrics. Ballet and/or jazz class enrollment is encouraged for lyrical dancers. Uniform: Black leotard, nude paws, and ballet skirt or jazz shorts. Ballet class is strongly encouraged. (2022)
Musical Theater: Turn your dancer into a TRIPLE THREAT! Dancing, singing, & acting combined into one fun class. Dancers will learn about popular Broadway Shows and vocal scales, practice auditioning, and exercise vital performing techniques while improving their performance quality for the stage. Uniform: Black leotard, jazz shorts, & tan jazz shoes. (2022)
Poms Dance: Poms Dance is dancing while using Pom Poms and is a style of dance most seen performed by high school and college students at halftime during basketball season and other school athletic events. Pom dance is sometimes also known as a school or college dance squad or dance team. Pom dance is different than cheerleading as it focused mainly on dance rather than cheer and stunting. Poms dancers at ADFS will learn precision movements of dance, beginner acro skills, and popular cheers. This class is great for dancers interested in pursuing cheer or poms with their school. (2022)
Power Tumbling: Power Tumbling is for intermediate and advanced acro dancers to take their tumbling and acrobatic skills to a higher level. The class will focus on strength and conditioning to build power tumbling elements such as handsprings, aerials, tucks, and other power-based tumbling skills. Dancers must be enrolled in both Acro, and Ballet, and have a strong foundation of cartwheels and walkovers. This is a high-impact class on dance floors (not sprung gymnastic floors) so dancers must be able to withstand its intensity physically and mentally. Recommended for dancers ages 7+. *This is a non-recital class. (2022)
Pre-Pointe/Pointe: By invitation only. Level II+ dancers must be enrolled in a minimum of 2 ballet classes. Dancers will learn and practice exercises and techniques to prepare and attain Pointe shoes. “Pointe Tests” will be administered throughout the dance season to earn their Pointe shoes and constructive feedback to help the dancer throughout the process. Ballet ‘en Pointe’ requires physical strength and proper technique to be performed correctly and without injury. Dancers must complete years of ballet technique classes before their bodies are ready for the stress Pointe dancing can create. Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT): PBT is an innovative body-conditioning and strengthening program developed by Marie Walton-Mahon for students to understand the depth of training muscle memory in achieving their personal best. PBT is a great alternative class to fulfill ballet requirements for AcroDance or PrePointe/Pointe. Uniform: Black leotard, pink convertible tights, and pink canvas/leather ballet shoes. Physio-ball and yoga mat required. Hair must be in a clean high bun for floor work. Hair kits may be purchased at the Front Desk. Messy buns are unacceptable. *This is a non-recital class. (2022)
Tap: Tap dancing is the combination of sounds and rhythms characterized by using the sounds of tap shoes striking the floor as a form of percussion. Dancers will be instructed in both Broadway and Rhythm Style tap dancing, in addition to focusing on tap performance. Uniform: Black leotard, jazz shorts or leggings, black lace-up tap shoes. (2022)
Boys: At ADFS, boys dance too! Boys are welcome in all our combo and levels classes based on age. Boys wear solid black pants or shorts, solid black or white t-shirts for dance classes, and black tap, ballet, or jazz shoes, respectfully. HipHop dancers may wear comfortable athletic wear with the required hip-hop shoes. Please contact ADFS for more information about our options for boys.
